Winning the Royal Automobile Club’s Motoring Book of the Year (under £50) award 2021 and featured as Octane Magazine’s Book of the Month as well as receiving rave reviews from Practical Classics Magazine, Hagerty, MotorSport Magazine, Classic and Sportscar Magazine and others, this is a quirky book with hidden suprise and delight chapters about one of worlds most famous and loved quirky cars.
Written by the designer of the last Robin made, the book provides a unique insiders look at the creation and demise of the famous three wheeler. Packed full of illustrations, and with input from every designer involved in it’s history, this unconventional and entertaining book answers the myths once and for all such as stability and aerodynamics revealing many surprises along the way. Started in the 1930s in one mans shed, the famous 3-wheelers were so popular they funded multi-million pound companies and their vehicle developments around the world. The technological knowledge of Reliant was sought after by Ford, Lotus and many other companies as new standards were set over and over again.
What many see as a joke was in fact a very cleverly designed product that met huge demand in an aspirational marketplace not only from the British motoring public, but around the world, culminating in sportscars, off the peg car factories for countries governments and links to famous designers such as Gandini. The Robin was engineered by the team of a winning Formula One designer, and the fascinating story of its long and colourful history from simple product to characterful icon is covered here with a personal link to its author who was part of the attempt to revive the historic marque one last time.
The author has been an automotive designer for over 30 years working around the world for OEMs ranging from Reliant to well known luxury brands and a Californian concept studio.
